Enrolling in Traditional Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten

The Cypress School District offers both traditional and transitional kindergarten programs.

Traditional Kindergarten:  Students must be 5 years of age on or before September 1.
Transitional Kindergarten:  Open to children who will turn 5 years of age between September 2 and December 2.

Transitional kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum in the first year that is age and developmentally appropriate. Program content is based upon the California Preschool Learning Foundations and the California state standards for kindergarten. TK classes are offered at various school sites throughout the district. Your student may be assigned to attend TK at a school other than your home school.  If that is the case, your child will return to your home school for the second year of regular kindergarten.

Enrollment for the upcoming school year begins in February. Visit your home school to start the enrollment process for both traditional and transitional kindergarten.

Immunization Requirements:  California law requires your child to have received the following vaccinations prior to enrolling in traditional or transitional kindergarten:

Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus (DPT) Five (5) doses
Polio Four (4) doses
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Two (2) doses
Hepatitis B Three (3) doses
Varicella (chickenpox) Two (2) doses

Under Senate Bill 277, which took effect on January 1, 2016, exemption from immunizations based on personal belief is no longer permissible.

Our priority is always to ensure that students attend their home school or the school of choice elected by their parent(s). However, the practical reality is that, when a grade level is full at a school based on class sizes that we maintain to ensure optimal student learning, we may need to administratively transfer a child to another school within the Cypress School District that has seats available.
