Student Transfers

Acceptance Period: The open enrollment period for the 2020/21 school year is February 26, 2020 - April 24, 2020
UPDATE . . . The acceptance period for intradistrict transfers has been extended to May 1, 2020

Open enrollment is the only time parents of currently enrolled students may request a transfer from their home school of residence to another school within the district.

Parents of new students enrolling for the upcoming school year must concurrently submit an intradistrict transfer request during the open enrollment period. Intradistrict transfer requests for students who move into the district after the annual open enrollment period will be considered on a space-available basis.

Intradistrict transfers do not need to be renewed. Once approved, the intradistrict transfer school becomes the student's permanent home school, even if the family moves to another address within the district.

Intradistrict transfers are not accepted for the transitional kindergarten (TK) program. TK is a districtwide program with classes held at various, but not all, school sites. We will endeavor to place TK students at their home school if a TK class is held there. However, if TK is not held at the student's home school or if the TK class is full, the student will be placed at another district school for TK and then returned to their home school the following year for kindergarten.

Transportation is not provided for students who have been approved for an intradistrict transfer.

Students approved for intradistrict placement must demonstrate satisfactory attendance, effort, academic achievement, and behavior.

Cypress School District accepts interdistrict transfer requests for students who live outside the district’s boundaries. The parent must first contact their district of residence to obtain a release from that district. Once obtained, Cypress School District will consider the request.

Once an interdistrict transfer has been approved and the student has been enrolled in the district, that student will be considered permanent. There is no need to renew the interdistrict transfer, unless required by the district of residence.

When a grade level is full at a school, the district may need to administratively transfer a newly enrolled student to another school within the Cypress School District that has seats available to ensure optimal class size for student learning. This can be a temporary placement or made permanent if a child settles, is happy, and the parents do not want to move their child. When space becomes available, the student will be offered the opportunity to attend his/her home school. The home school office will call the parent, and the parent may either accept or decline the offer.
