In-person workshops will be held at the district’s administrative headquarters, located at 5816 Corporate Avenue, Cypress. Virtual workshops will be held over Zoom. 

 

Workshops are intended for parents and guardians only - We kindly request that children not attend.

 

Building an Everyday Explorer in Your Child

3/22/23, 10:30 -11:30 a.m. & 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Discover ways to engage and explore the outdoors with your child using scientific tools and technology. See how your local park and other outdoor areas can become a place of curiosity and wonderment. Learn about the importance of citizen science and how you and your family can become citizen scientists!

Positive Communication

In this workshop, caregivers will learn effective ways to communicate with their children. We will be discussing the different forms of communication and how to be more assertive when speaking by using "I" statements and clear instructions.

Developing Reading Comprehension Skills

5/3/23, 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 6:30-7:30 p.m.

This workshop will offer practical ideas for improving your child's reading comprehension. Learn the importance of experiencing different genres and how to select books at your child's "just right" level. Examples of question stems and ways to get children thinking critically about what they read will also be shared.

Family Outdoor Science

Enjoy the great outdoors as a family with simple activities that engage your children in science. Experience “Nature Journaling” as a way to collect and organize your observations, questions, connections, and explanations on the pages of a notebook using words, pictures, and numbers. Included in this workshop is a nature-inspired scavenger hunt that is tailored to your child’s current grade-level science standards.

Developing Early Literacy Skills

11/29/22, 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 6:30-7:30 p.m.

This workshop will provide some easy-to-implement ideas for helping improve your child's decoding skills and reading fluency. Learn how to model good reading habits, ways to help when your child is "stuck" on a word, and activities that can be done at home to improve your child's ability to quickly recognize sight words. Practical ideas for developing early literacy skills will also be shared.

Building Social and Emotional Skills

Social-emotional learning (SEL) has many benefits for children, including increased confidence, improved academic performance, and the ability to more effectively communicate. In this workshop we will share fun ways to practice SEL strategies at home. The activities are designed to fit into your daily routine and provide ways to further connect with your child.
